Designed for XpresslifeTifa’s Kimono-inspired contest. [link] Contest Rules: Design a kimono that you would wear or that is functional today in everyday busy life. Most of all have fun with it!
To some people, this may have diverged too far from the kimono. I thought about designing a kimono-inspired dress but after seeing so many of them where I work and how *wonderfully* they sell, I decided not to do the cliché. Since contests are for fun, not for bragging rights (at least that’s what we liked to tell ourselves, right?), I decided to go with a risk and design something that had a kimono feel but was not really a kimono. And, if I were any good at sewing, I’d make this in a heartbeat and wear it frequently. Especially the boots. I do love knee high boots. I don’t know why.
Eventually this became the undergarment to a coat that will be part of the collection I am designing for the DA fashion week, hence the colors and the freakish fascination with the diamond shape. And the excessive amount of detail that killed me in the coloring stage. Consider it a sneak preview! ^-^
Took 11 hours (give or take thirty minutes) from start to finish. 10 of those hours were on the computer. Because this piece just decided to be persnickety in the coloring stage. Grrr.
Details: Kimono is made of burgundy and pink patterned silk with gold thread (too bad you can’t see it) and black lining around the neckline. This Kimono is very special though. The “obi” is made of more silk with a flower pattern (brush courtesy of [link] ) that is sewn through hidden stitches to the garment so that the wearer is not required to have someone help dress her. The large band of silk is sewn to create a sort of “bow” in the back that is absolutely non-traditional (yay!). Above it is yet another “belt” that is made of black silk with a brass diamond accent. Both are sewn in place. The back of the kimono top has a zipper to allow for this and the two overlapping panels are also sewn in place. Very complicated to sew, but very simplistic for the wearer.
Leggings are cut to mid-calf to allow them to lay nicely under boots and yet still look cute with pointed toe heels. Leggings are made of gold colored silk with the same flower pattern as the obi and has black accents.
The boots are made of black suede with silk accents that are non-removable. The boot zips at the front with the zipper hidden by an overlaying flap held in place by the brass snap button at the top. The pointed toe heels (seen on the side detail) are also made of black suede.
Accessories include a brass diamond-faceted choker and brass pendant necklace.
You definitely made the right choice not going with the cliché. I've never been found of kimonos or the japonisme trend this spring, but I would so wear your design. It looks elegant and fun at the same time, and I think you have managed to capture the "geisha spirit" in your design. My favourite thing about this design would have to be the pants. They look so wonderful and I'm sure the delicate fabric would look great on the catwalk. And I'm not going to start talking about the lovely detail on the boots, because then I would have to write two paragraphs about how wonderful they are

How do you measure a year? In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee?

All in all, a wonderful design.
